## Map shows where on the globe you’d end up if you dug straight through

The spot where you are right now and the spot on the other side of the earth, diametrically opposite where you are right now, are called antipodes. If you had to guess where on earth the antipodes of your current location is, the safest bet would be to say “the ocean,” since less than 4% of land is antipodal to more land.

But if you want a more specific answer, this nifty, interactive map may be of service.

Fun Fact: If we were to drill a hole through, put a tube in and evacuated it, we could transport people and goods to the other end of the world at no further energy cost. Just drop, accelerate, pass the middle, decelerate and then maybe some device would catch (maybe travelling would be done in tubes that’d stick to a magnet on the other side).

It would be lots of fun, as you’d experience lots of free fall (~35 mins). If the tube were made of glass, it’s be educatig too (though vertiginous), especially at the center…

Fun ‘Fact’???

Hahaha! This

What do they teach kids in school these days?!

I’ve wondered this. If it were possible to dig all the way through and insert a heat-proof tunnel and I jumped in, what would happen when I hit the middle? At some point my descent would become ascent, right? When I hit the “gravitational midpoint” would I just float there?

• Carr says:

In theory (neglecting other potential externalities), it would work just as Andrej posited: The momentum built from the fall would propel you through the zero gravity in the center to a point equidistant on the other side. Think of it like a pendulum.

However, if you were to slow yourself down and simply experience the center point with no momentum, there would be zero gravity.

someone’s been watching “total recall” 2012

Fact: If you did that, your goods and yourself will end up in a frikken ocean.

3. bridgecross says:

Fun facts; 1; you and your goods would melt in the molten lava of the mantle. 2; the deepest mine ever dug just barely scratches the top of the crust.
3; for the energy it would take to dig such a hole, you could ship all the people in the world, around the earth, several thousand times.

You people have no imagination. Go ahead, dream a little.

5. CDS says:

Well, there goes the age old theory of digging a hole to China.

6. kamal says:

The core of the earth will consist of molten lava.. Good luck!!
