Since the White House released a picture of Obama doing a little skeet shooting on Saturday, the internet has been mildly astir with people manipulating the photo. Some are predictable, others bizarre. Some seem to be trying to make a point, and others are just for fun.

Thing is, he wasn’t skeet shooting… which you can totally tell from that pic because he’d either have the gun pointed towards the ground, or in the sky, you know, shooting skeet. He could have been target shooting, sure, but why not just say that?

It’s like in movies when actors pretend to be musicians while the music is dubbed over, but they have never held a trumpet before and it’s painfully obvious.

It’s intentional – called a compensator – some of the propellant gases are ported out the top to reduce the tendency for the muzzle to rise when the shotgun is fired. Gases can also be ported to the side and/or slightly rearward to reduce the recoil of the gun.

Very interesting. I have been shooting, learning about, and been around firearms since I was knee high to a grasshopper. (as well as them being in my family for as far back as possible, in the States and Africa.) and I have never heard of this. It makes sense, so I don’t know why I haven’t. Well, it’s a poor day one doesn’t learn something new.
        Thanks!

That shotgun is made that way to train children, and that jet of gas eases greatly the recoil.
