During a question-and-answer session with Billy Joel at Vanderbilt University, one bold but endearingly nervous student went all in and asked if he could play “New York State of Mind” on the piano for Billy Joel to sing along to. Joel paused for a second and then said, “Okay.”

It’s awesome…

I love this. If I were famous, this is how I would want to treat people. I’m sure that this was nothing for Billy Joel, but for this kid, he’ll never forget it. Having kids of my own, I wish that athletes, musicians, and others would throw some crumbs to especially kids. Way to go, Billy Joel. It makes me want to go buys some of his music.

Andy, you are so correct. That was a great gesture for Billy Joel to invite “Michael” on stage and to accompany him. Michael will always remember that experience with Billy Joel. Also, you are correct in wishing that more famous people would do the same. Have a good day……….

I’m in New York right now. This song has gone through my head several times in the weeks I’ve been here so far, but this video showed me the character of the man behind the song, in being up for something like this. But absolutely hats off to Michael Pollack for bringing such magic to the keys!

I was fortunate enough to see this live. Truly amazing! Billy Joel is not only a fantastic musician, but also very funny, charismatic, and humble. We are always grateful to have the chance to share the talents of our peers and were all overjoyed when Michael was given this opportunity to shine. (A *very* enthusiastic standing ovation followed this performance.)

    Anchor Down!

this guy has a story to tell for the rest of his life – not only playing for Billy singing, but getting some musical input into it… I have a feeling that he could have had his pick of any woman he wanted at the Q&A that night :P

  5. Sarah says:

Hahaha … Awesome! If I was that guy, I would be walking around saying, “Oh ya? Well, Billy Joel says I got chops…” every time someone insulted me. Billy Joel has still got it!

  6. yesmame says:

This is not the first time Billy Joel has done that. It’s just one of the first time it happened on camera. I have seen him do this before.

  7. Ann Mason says:

This is called Giving Back. Someone gave Mr. Joel his break, and he gave his young man his chance also. Michael is a very accomplished Pianist. If you noticed Mr. Joel want to let Michael shine. That’s what great performers do.
