In 1994, photographer Rineke Dijkstra met a 6-year-old girl named Almerisa who had fled Bosnia with her family and was living in a refugee asylum in Leiden. Beginning then, and continuing almost yearly for the next decade and a half, Dijkstra met with Almerisa and took her picture.
The series, though minimal in the specific information it conveys about Almerisa, still tells a powerful story about a young woman growing up — from girlhood, to awkward adolescence, to the sullen teen years, to adulthood, to new motherhood — in a new country that, over time, becomes home…
