Just your typical Canadian family spending time together in their ice castle…

Wait, what?

That’s right. In early December, temperatures in northwest Ontario weren’t predicted to go above -25 Celcius. For about 4 weeks. So one Ontario man decided to…ya know… build an ice fortress.

The Materials

Using 8-liter plastic shoebox-shaped containers, he made 30 ice blocks a day, with a new batch becoming ready every 12 hours. Food coloring was added for the fun color effect.

After he filled the driveway with the ice blocks, he had to get them to the backyard. Hence the seven-foot black ash toboggan…

He then marked off a 25’x25′ area in the yard, compacted a base wall using plywood, and set to building…

The mortar he invented was a mixture of snow and water to make “slush mortar,” which would freeze within minutes…
