Owl swivels its head backward and then tips it completely upside down
As photographer Lisa Kee was snapping away at Missouri’s World Bird Sanctuary, this owl became curious and turned her head to get a better look at Kee.
Nothing unusual there. Birds turn their heads to look almost straight back all the time. But then, this…
Kee recounts…
Minerva was turning her head from side to side quite intrigued with the noise from my camera and then just flipped it upside down.
I have watched birds of prey turn their heads all different ways but to see one completely upside down like this was a first. I had to double check my camera to see it actually happened.
Kee says that as this photo has become her most popular she’s received praise for it but also skepticism from those who would rather yell “Shopped!” than be impressed by anything. She promises it’s not a manipulated photo, saying she’s just glad to have had her camera pointed at the right place at the right time.

Rat hunting with dogs in New York City alleys [pictures & video]

In New York City, there is a group of dog owners who get together weekly when the weather permits to hunt rats among the piled bags of garbage in the city’s dank alleyways. The dogs are mostly Terriers and so the primary purported purpose of the group is to maintain the instincts these animals were originally bred for, namely hunting vermin. There is, of course, the added benefit of rat extermination that accompanies a successful expedition.
While this will turn the stomachs of many, the hunters point out that the poison that is typically used to manage the rat population takes hours to kill its victims whereas “death by Terrier is almost instantaneous.” Also, no dogs have been reported harmed from this strange hobby.
