For a series of photos surely embarked upon more for the shock value than the artistry, photographer Arne Svenson took pictures out his window into the luxury apartments across the street. He has titled this series “The Neighbors” and it features residents of the nearby condos living life quite ordinarily without any sense that they are being watched.

Svenson describes his project…

The Neighbors don’t know they are being photographed; I carefully shoot from the shadows of my home into theirs. I am not unlike the birder, quietly waiting for hours, watching for the flutter of a hand or the movement of a curtain as an indication that there is life within.

Now that those photos are displayed in a NYC gallery, the neighbors have found out about his illicit photography and are — as you can imagine — indignant, to say the least.

But Svenson doesn’t care…

For my subjects there is no question of privacy; they are performing behind a transparent scrim on a stage of their own creation with the curtain raised high.

When artist Iris Scott was finishing a painting one time, she saw a spot that needed to be touched up with yellow, but all her brushes were wet with different blues. She didn’t feel like cleaning any of them, so she just did the adjustment with her finger…and she discovered a new passion.
