Most people could relate to the dog's expressions entirely.
There’s that loyal target super-fan thing again. Most people swooned at the dog’s cuteness, which is undeniable. But many people took issue with the dog being in Target in the first place.
Many people who commented on Zira's Facebook and Instagram photos were not pleased.
Some had issue with the fact that the dog is in a cart where groceries go. Others were upset that a non-service dog was taken into a store that only allows service dogs. Many pointed out that an untrained puppy could pose a distraction or even a hazard to working service animals, and that bringing a pet to a store is inconsiderate to other shoppers (and staff) who might have allergies or a fear of dogs.
After her Target photos went viral, Zira's mom reached out to Target and Zira herself issued an apology.
“Hi everyone! Zira here. I’m sure you’ve all seen my pictures of me strolling through Target. And I’m here to say I’ve learned a lot about the laws and regulations on pets allowed in stores. My parents weren’t aware of all the risks and dangers when they brought me in there. I was set on a towel in the cart, so I didn’t make contact with the bottom of the cart. We did not run into any other service animals. If we did, we sure would have left! I didn’t want to cause any trouble, the Target employees should have told me to leave instead of asking to pet me! My trip to Target does not make it okay for all dogs to go to their local market. We will now be more considerate about service animals needing to do their job! Everyone should do the same! -Zira 🐾”
But what to do if your pup just LOVES shopping?
“Who would’ve known Petsmart is just as much fun as Target?!? And I’m super welcomed here! Petsmart is a pet friendly environment, and unlike Target, I’m not putting any service animals at risk! Now time to go buy some treats!”
Many stores do allow dogs other than service dogs, which is great news for Zira and her mom.
Zira’s mom has certainly learned something from the brouhaha that ensued after she posted her mega-cute pictures. She writes, “Reminder: Stores policies can change from state to state. Always call ahead and check to make sure your pup is safe to go with you.”
So, what do you think? Should people be allowed to bring their dogs more places? Or are strict no pets policies good?
