onald Trump, the President of the United States, just cliffhangered the entire country with an ominous message during a photo op at a dinner with military leaders and their spouses.
The comments he made to the press while pictures were being snapped were about "the calm before the storm," but he wouldn't get any more specific than that. When asked what he meant by "the storm," he only offered the foreboding and mildly threatening, "You'll find out."
Contrary to what you might be thinking, this is real life and not an Agatha Christie novel.
You have to hear what he said.
This was a photo op at a nice dinner with military leaders at the White House. In no world should this have become a platform for the president to cryptically warn the entire nation that something big is about to happen.
While photos were being taken, Trump, seemingly out of nowhere, said, “You guys know what this represents? Maybe it’s the calm before the storm.”
“What’s the storm?” reporters obviously immediately asked.
“Could be the calm, the calm before the storm,” Trump responded.
When reporters asked, yet again, what he was referring to, he said, “We have the world’s great military people in this room, I will tell you that. And uh, we’re going to have a great evening, thank you all for coming.”
“What storm, Mr. President?” one determined voice sang out.
“You’ll find out,” Trump replied.
The Internet went bonkers with shocked reactions and theories galore.
It’s almost like the president believes his job is to create a suspenseful political thriller, but this is real life, not Tinker Tailor Soldier Trump.
Others pointed out that if this is the calm, well, then we must be totally f***ed.
It’s the opinion of many people that things in the U.S. right now are decidedly not calm.
In fact, politics and social issues and world relations are completely volatile and insane at the moment and have been for some time.
What exactly has been happening during this supposed "calm"? Oh, right.
The past six weeks have been filled to the brim with devastating natural disasters, unconscionable tragedy on a record-breaking scope, and constant pounding waves of political and social chaos.
Mr. President, there is no calm.
So what could he have meant? Journalist Nicholas Kristof has a theory:
“I think what he was trying to do was send a signal to North Korea,” Kristof speculated on CNN Tonight with Don Lemon. “I don’t, in fact, think that a ‘storm’ is imminent. We don’t see signals that hostilities are imminent with North Korea, but I think he was trying to send a warning shot.”
Kristof went on to say that he believes Trump’s comments might have an empowering effect on North Korea.
Basically, like many of the moves that Trump has made lately, this seems not good. But what will actually come of this? I guess we have to wait to “find out.”
