Executions on hold because of a shortage of essential drug

By Abraham Piper

There’s no question in my mind that the world would be a better place with some people dead. I guess that means that, in principle, I support the death penalty.

However, in actual practice, I’m dead set against it. I’m not going to argue about that here; I just want to give some background as to why I feel kinda happy, almost amused, that Hospira, the one company that produces sodium thiopental—the anesthetic used for lethal injections—is all out of it.

Kentucky and Oklahoma only have enough left for 1 execution each, so after that everything’s on hold. Other states are declining to share how much they have left, but obviously it’s limited.

Of course, the reprieve is temporary, since the good folks at Hospira are gonna get the drug back on the market as soon as possible. But still, a few months of less killing won’t hurt anyone.
