In extreme heat, canola oil and some soup explode in a huge mushroom cloud

January 2, 2013 | By Abraham | 1 comment

Here are some folks bringing in the new year with a sky high blast of hot oil and chicken soup.

I’ve set the video to start just a few seconds before the explosion. Back it up to the beginning to see the set up and hear the explanation of what’s happening. To be honest, though, I listened to the guys talking about what they were doing twice and I still have no clue what’s going on.

Fortunately, the explosion is awesome whether I understand it or not…

    That’s pretty cool.

From the looks of it, they’re heating the cooking oil to it’s flash point (something like 600+ deg F), and then dropping a can of chicken broth into the pot (looked like there was an actuator on the underside of the metal frame to the left of the pot). The can of broth explodes, atomizing the canola oil (mixing it with oxygen), and the flame ignites it.
