Obama Commutes Most of Chelsea Manning’s Prison Sentence

By Robin Zlotnick

President Obama commuted the bulk of the remaining prison sentence of Chelsea Manning, the army intelligence analyst convicted in 2010 of swiping 700,000 military files and diplomatic cables and giving them to WikiLeaks. Manning, who is a transgender woman incarcerated in a male military prison, tried to commit suicide twice last year. She has been jailed for almost seven years, and her 35-year sentence was by far the longest punishment ever imposed in the U.S. for a leak conviction. Now, thanks to President Obama, she will be freed on May 17, 2017 rather than in 2045.
