s more and more statues honoring Confederate soldiers get torn down, people are asking important questions, namely: What should replace those statues? Do we just ignore the empty spaces left behind, or should we create new art to replace them?
Luckily, there's a petition going around that aims to take this problem, flip it, and reverse it.
Confederate statues, your time is up.
Over the past few weeks, a bunch of Confederate statues have been removed from their pedestals. Of all the people that we should be celebrating, Confederate soldiers don’t exactly top the list.
Here's one of the statues in question.
This is the Confederate Monument in Portsmouth, Virginia. It’s a 35-foot-tall obelisk that was erected to honor the Confederate soliders who died in the Civil War. And its days are numbered.
People want to see the statue taken down, but we wouldn’t want to leave an empty pedestal in its place, right? Of course not. There needs to be a replacement worthy of the honor.
And the internet agrees that the replacement should be a statue of Missy Elliott.
Yes. That’s right, Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott should replace this Confederate statue. At least, that’s what the creators of this Change.org petition think.
The petition appeared online over the weekend, and it’s safe to say that most of Twitter is decidedly onboard.
Imagine this in statue form. You're smiling, aren't you? You might even be gyrating a little. That's ok. Us too.
Have we created the technology for dancing statues yet?
If not, we’re gonna need to get on that ASAP.
Some are calling this the most important petition of our time.
You’ve probably signed some important petitions in the past, but nothing this important. Guys. We’re talking about Missy Elliott, here. The woman who gave us “Get Ur Freak On.” Get that lady a statue.
