Feel in the mood for a little fright?
You could watch your run-of-the-mill horror film, or you could watch a true horror film.
One of those frightening, downright disturbing orgies of chilling excess that linger in your nightmares and haunt the darkest part of your days.
Here are 10 of the worst ones.
10. The Human Centipede: The First Sequence (2009)
Where do we even start with this one? This Dutch horror masterpiece tells the story of German doctor Josef Heiter, a world-renowned expert at separating conjoined twins who has now decided he wants to make a “human centipede.”
Heiter plans to create his magnum opus by surgically fusing people mouth-to-anus. To this end, he kidnaps three unlucky tourists and gets to work. We won’t spoil the rest of the movie for you, but word to the wise – don’t bring popcorn…
9. Ichi The Killer (2001)
Adapted from the manga series of the same name by Hideo Yamamoto, Ichi The Killer examines the violent Yakuza underworld via the lens of the titular Ichi, a normally quiet and mentally unstable young man who becomes sexually aroused when infuriated.
When Ichi is brainwashed by a rival Yakuza clan into believing he witnessed a very traumatic event, he goes on a killing spree the likes of which have seared themselves into cinema history. The film is so disturbing, in fact, that film festivals handed out vomit bags, people fainted, and entire countries banned it.
8. Audition (1999)
Here’s a film that’ll have you shuddering long after it’s done, mainly because it’s an epic bait and switch. Audition follows Shigeharu Aoyama, a recent widower on the hunt for a new wife. When he hosts a casting call for a fake movie with the intention of finding a new wife, he soon becomes infatuated with the enigmatic Asami Yamazaki.
