When you're a celebrity, you can count on your fans keeping pretty close tabs on your whereabouts. When you're a celebrity with 126 million Instagram followers, there's hardly anything you can do that will go unnoticed. In fact, when you're the most followed celebrity on Instagram, and the first person to ever acquire more than 100 million followers, it's very hard to fly under the radar. Earlier this summer, Selena Gomez appeared to be laying low, even after releasing a huge new music project. This morning, she finally revealed the reason she's been a little MIA and it's both scary and heartwarming.
The past few years have been a whirlwind for Selena Gomez.
The Wizards of Waverly Place star has gone through more in the past few years than many people experience in a lifetime. She’s a rockstar for dealing with everything that life throws at her — both the good and the bad.
One of the good things life has offered her was the chance to be featured in Time Magazine's special "Firsts" project.
The multimedia project features women who are changing the world. They’ve given Gomez the title of “Tastemaker.” As the first person to reach 100 million followers on Instagram, it seems like the perfect honorific.
But it hasn’t all been magazine covers and superstardom for Selena Gomez.
Back in 2015, the singer and actor revealed that she had been diagnosed with Lupus.
Gomez chose not to share her diagnosis with the world right away. When she stepped out of the spotlight to focus on her treatment and receive chemotherapy, gossip magazines began circulating rumors that she was in rehab for drug addiction treatment.
Imagine not only being very sick, but also having to deal with millions of people gossiping about you while you’re focused on trying to feel better.
After Gomez went public with her Lupus diagnosis, she spoke out about the disease on several occasions, even asking people to donate to Lupus research organizations for her birthday.
The Mayo Clinic defines Lupus as a “chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs.” They also say that it can be “difficult to diagnose because its signs and symptoms often mimic those of other ailments.”
Sadly, there is no cure for the disease.
This summer, Gomez released a music video — and then once again disappeared from the spotlight.
The star has remained relatively silent on social media since the music video for “Fetish” dropped in July.
Yesterday, she finally revealed the reason she’s been laying low…
