10 - But we can't be in love because I'm rich and you're the help.
Any good RomCom has to have conflict that the characters must overcome to finally be together. What’s better than some good old fashioned class disparity? Falling for the help is a classic plot line. 9 - The bet. In RomComs people are always using other people as objects of bets.
In real life, if we ever found out that a group of people had placed a bet involving the manipulation of the feelings and life of another person, we’d hate those people. But in a movie, we forgive them and fall in love with them anyway. Hey, it’s all good. She got the makeover and it turned out she was pretty all along!
8 - JUST KISS HER ALREADY!
The kiss between the main characters is the bait that keeps us watching. Before we get our prize, which will likely happen when it rains, we first must endure many near-kiss moments. Long looks never happen in real life, but we love them in a good RomCom.
7 - Oh! It's been you all along!
The best friend who’s been by your side through it all and yet, you never noticed that he was everything you ever wanted. The girl next door was just your friend, you never noticed that she was perfect for you in every way. Sometimes the friends realize it at the same time. Sometimes, one is hopelessly in love with the second, and the second has no idea.
6 - The big, embarrassing gesture.
Maybe it’s a boom box held overhead. Perhaps a series of notecards revealing the undying love that can never be realized. But it’s best when it’s done with song and dance.
