Thirst trap: noun A shameless attempt by a celebrity or other social media savvy personage to elicit interest from others by posting sexually provocative pictures on social media platforms. The phrase thirst trap has been around for a while, but it first started gaining traction in 2011, when that venerable arbiter of all things pop culture, the urban dictionary, saw fit to post a definition of it on their site. Since then, thirst traps have been a social media minefield – popping up across the internet with succulent regularity to catch unwary passersby in a desert of sexual frustration. Kim Kardashian is a thirst trap. Khloe and the other three too. Idris Elba – thirst trap in a bespoke suit. All the boys from every boyband ever, thirst traps in training. The point is, thirst traps are everywhere, but for now, here are the thirst traps of 2017.
Henry Cavill - Superman Thirst Trap
Yes, we know Henry Cavill just starred in one of the most talked-about movies of the year, Call Me By Your Name, and yes, we know he’s not the OG Superman (that honor will always belong to Christopher Reeve), but Henry Cavill will always be Superman thirst trap to us. Tall, square-jawed, muscled – with that hint of do-gooder glint in his eye.
Superman never looked so scrumptious.
BTS - Boy band Thirst Trap
For a certain segment of the population (teen girls, we totally mean teen girls!) Kpop boy band BTS is the hottest. Thing. Ever. With their perfectly coiffed hair and androgynous good looks, they have girls all across the United States – no, the world – screaming their names… all seven of them.
Gigi Gorgeous - Barbie Thirst Trap
There’s thirst traps, and then there’s thirst-a-grams – entire Instagram pages dedicated to the art of the thirst trap. Youtube personality and social media influencer Gigi Gorgeous falls into the latter category. Every picture is carefully curated to inspire lust and awe, every pose designed to ensure thirsty admirers fall at her feet. For Gigi, it’s all in a day’s work.
Taika Waititi - Trending Thirst Trap
Director and screenwriter Taika Waititi burst (seemingly fully formed and wearing a Hawaiian shirt) into our collective consciousness in late 2017 with the release of his blockbuster Thor: Ragnarok. In reality, the kiwi director has been responsible for a number of subversive and delightful films including What We Do In The Shadows and The Hunt For Wilderpeople, and has been serving us absurdity with a side of Hawaiian shirts for years.
Nyle DiMarco – Sultry Thirst Trap
There’s hot, and then there’s Nyle DiMarco. The second male winner and first deaf winner of America’s Next Top model, DiMarco is as charitable as he is handsome – his foundation, The Nyle DiMarco foundation, seeks to “improve the life of every Deaf person in the world,” by “improv[ing] access to accurate, research-based information about early language acquisition–specifically, the bilingual education approach.”
Oh, and he won Dancing With the Stars, so there’s that too.
