eople who adopt animals are heroes, and Alex Andreou wanted to become a hero himself by providing a home for a rescue cat.
He drove two hours to pick up a cat that "desperately needed rehoming" and then was told he couldn't bring it home. Wait, what?
And wait until you hear the reason why.
"So I just traveled two hours to adopt a cat that desperately needed rehoming," Andreou tweeted.
“…and was turned down for being gay. WTF IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE.”
Andreou posted the insane text conversation he had with the cat’s owner, who declined to let him adopt the cat because “I am religious so I strongly disagree with the life style.”
Yes. This happened. In 2017.
Obviously, this exchange left Andreou feeling awful.
As far as LGBTQ+ rights have come, gay people still face intense discrimination on a daily basis all over the world.
Sometimes we’re reminded that we haven’t come as far as we think.
The Internet responded with incredulity and support.
In what world is a gay person an unsuitable cat owner? In what world does someone’s sexuality at all affect their ability to care for another life?
While the experience was horrendous, it did open some people's eyes to the hate that still exists.
It must have been difficult for Andreou to share, but in doing so, he reminded people of the bigotry and intolerance that’s still out there.
Of course, not every response was positive.
Andreou’s story has been retweeted over 15,000 times and has over 31,000 likes, so he was bound to encounter trolls.
Some even accused him of fabricating the story.
But most importantly, what happened to that cat? Let’s find out.
