Instead, he saved a life.
If you don't know what slacklining is, it looks like this.
Slacklining is a sport that involves balancing and walking on a rope that is fixed high above the ground but isn’t stretched to be completely taut.
It’s for badasses only.
Mickey Wilson is one such badass.
This professional slackliner has accomplished daring feats and terrifying stunts, but he wasn’t prepared for the most important slackline walk of his life, which came on January 4, 2017.
He planned to go skiing by himself that day, but instead, Mickey used his slacklining skills to save a friend's life when things went horribly wrong.
On his Instagram account, Mickey recounted the events of the day.
While he planned to ski alone, some friends recognized him and they began skiing together. One of the guys with them got his backpack caught in the lift as he tried to jump off, and the lift dragged him down the hill.
Then, they saw the horrible thing that happened.
His friend was dangling from the ski lift, his neck caught by the strap of his backpack. There was no time to wait for ski patrol, so Mickey sprang into action.
Mickey says he “had a eureka moment.” He realized he could climb the lift tower and get onto the cable, then shimmy down to him that way.
“I knew my slackline experience prepared me perfectly for this,” he wrote, “so I burst into action…A newly arrived ski patrolman threw me a knife and I luckily caught it on the first try and cut the strap. Our friend fell like a doll into the snow.”
The patrolmen started CPR and got his friend breathing before they rushed him to a hospital.
Here's Mickey's full message about his incredible rescue.
According to Mickey, fate intervened that day.
And thank goodness it did! Without Mickey there, this story may have had a much more tragic ending.
Slacklining saves lives, folks.
