Yesterday evening, the world suffered a huge loss when Tom Petty passed away.
Unfortunately, reports of his death had started circulating while he was actually still clinging to life. As you might imagine, his daughter had a huge problem with the irresponsible reporting by some members of the media. Her message to Rolling Stone uses some graphic language and doesn't pull any punches. But we're certainly not blaming her.
Yesterday, beloved music legend Tom Petty passed away.
However, the events leading up to his death were quite complicated.
TMZ broke the news that Petty had been rushed to the hospital Sunday night after having been found unconscious and in full cardiac arrest.
At some point, the LAPD Twitter account posted that Petty had died. However, their report was too early. At that point, Petty was still alive.
Several new outlets reported Petty’s demise while the musician was still clinging to life.
Before long, the LAPD finally tried to rectify their mistake.
They published a series of tweets apologizing for any "inconvenience" caused by the fact that they had provided faulty information to the media.
“Inconvenience” is sort of an odd word choice, here…
What was LAPD thinking? Did they misread a memo? Were they trying to be the first to break news?
By the time the LAPD apologized, the damage had already been done.
There were stories all over the internet claiming that Petty had died.
People were mourning him, but it was too soon.
While some may chalk the incident up to an honest mistake, there was at least one person who had no sympathy for news outlets who reported the "news" without first fact-checking it.
That person was Petty’s daughter, AnnaKim Violette.
When she saw that media outlets were erroneously reporting her father’s death, she had a very harsh message for them.
