“Ski ballet” hilariously combines figure skating and downhill skiing, and it was almost an olympic event

Ski ballet was an actual sport that existed from the late 1960s until as recently as 2000, when the International Ski Federation ended formal competition of the sport.

Ski ballet was actually featured as a demonstration sport in the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Games, but it never succeeded at gaining recognition as an Olympic event. After watching this video of a 1985 ski ballet competition in Breckenridge – complete with double twists, bumbling commentary, and air drumming with ski poles – it’s not hard to understand why…
