3 children have been found abandoned in an apartment along with the remains of another young child, authorities have said.
The news came in on Sunday.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez of the Harris County Sheriff’s Department said there had been a “very horrific situation” in which children, aged 15, 10, and 7, had been left alone “for an extended period of time.”
This morning, Gonzalez shared an update on the case.
He shared information that the mother of the children was found, with her boyfriend, on Sunday night and that the 15-year-old teenager told authorities that the remains belonged to his 9-year-old brother, who “had been dead for a year and his body was in the room next to his.”
The mother and her boyfriend were interviewed and released.
The sherrif also said that the three children were taken to hospital…
And that they seemed to be “malnourished and showed signs of physical injury.”
The story has broken hearts all over the world.
“Oh how horrible. I hope that justice will find those responsible for this, but that will never bring back those precious lives. News like this tears at your very soul. So sorry for those poor victims,” one social media user wrote.
“Very tragic. Been in this business for a long time and I had never heard of a scenario like this. It really caught me by surprise,” Gonzalez said on Monday morning.
“We’re gonna make sure we do everything we can and make sure we conduct a thorough follow-up investigation and make sure that the kids are okay.”
A homicide unit, child abuse unit, crime scene unit, and Child Protective Services are involved in the ongoing investigation.
