After being separated for 7 weeks due to the ongoing medical pandemic, a 4-year-old cancer patient cried with joy after finally being reunited with her dad - And the footage is truly heartwarming.
Out of all the illnesses in the world, cancer is by far one of the most devastating.
via: GettyA result of the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the body, cancer develops when the body's normal control mechanism stops working.
Instead of old cells dying like they're supposed to...
via: GettyThey instead mutate, forming new, abnormal cells.
We are a long way off from finding an official cure for cancer...
via: GettyAnd the numbers of those being diagnosed with the illness keep on rising every year. In 2019, an estimated 1.8 million cases of cancer were diagnosed in the United States alone.
And the treatment we do have is grueling.
via: GettyThe goal is to kill as many cancerous cells as possible, all the while avoiding any damage to the normal and healthy cells nearby.
However, this isn't always possible.
via: GettyThe most common treatment, chemotherapy, acts as a "poison" and kills off the abnormal cells. However, it can often kill normal cells, too, which makes people incredibly ill, resulting in hair loss, weight loss, and general sickness.
And, while someone is undergoing chemotherapy...
via: GettyTheir immune system becomes seriously compromised, meaning they have to avoid social interaction as much as possible.
And, during this ongoing medical pandemic...
via: GettyCancer patients have been suffering the most.
Those who are undergoing chemotherapy have been instructed to quarantine from their friends and family members.
via: GettyBecause of their compromised immune systems, they are more prone to contracting the potentially deadly virus.
And, heartbreakingly for some, they are separated from their family members as a result.
via: GettyWhile the rest of us self-isolate with friends and family, there are many cancer patients out there who have been forced to quarantine away from family members as to not compromise their health.
And 4-year-old Mila Sneddon has been one of them. The little girl, from Scotland, has been purposely kept away from her dad, Scott, as she underwent chemotherapy for her rare form of leukemia.
Scott has had to continue going to work to support the family...
via: TwitterSo, in an effort to keep his daughter safe, Scott temporarily moved out of his family's home and only interacted with Mila through a window or door, ITV News reported.
It's been a tremendously difficult time for the family.
via: TwitterNot only was Mila's mom, Lynda left to care for their sick daughter alone, she also lost her own grandmother as a result of the horrendous virus.
But Scott's daily visits to the house would lift their spirits...
via: TwitterAnd this week, he had some amazing news.
Weeks into their separation, Scott learned that he was being furloughed from his job.
via: TwitterThis meant that, after quarantining alone for 2 weeks, he would be able to eventually return to the family home. But he decided to keep this as a secret from little Mila in order to give her the best surprise.
Scott immediately retreated into isolation and waited until professionals said he was cleared to return home...
via: TwitterAnd, on Wednesday, he arrived back to the family home to surprise his unsuspecting daughter.
Instead of standing at the window...
via: TwitterScott walked into the kitchen, as Mila watched on in shock. "Hi, can I get a real hug?"
He walked over to hug his daughter for the first time...
via: TwitterWhose little face instantly lit up.
Mila giggled uncontrollably as Scott picked her up...
via: TwitterAnd, after exchanging a few "I love you"s, the pair stood silently and motionless as they embraced.
And, heartbreakingly, Mila burst into tears.
via: TwitterVisibly overcome with emotion, the little girl cried quietly as her dad continued to cuddle her. Scott asked, "How're you?" to which she replied quietly, "good", while wiping the tears from her face.
It was a truly beautiful moment.
via: TwitterAnd it's amazing to see that, after all their hardships, the family are finally reunited.
