It saddens me deeply that I still find myself having to report on such horrific stories, but, despite us living in 2020, unimaginable acts of animal cruelty still somehow happen all around the world.

One would have thought that, in this day and age, human beings could be decent enough to not inflict suffering and pain on our animal friends - but nope.

In Detroit, a dog was discovered by 4 young boys. What this animal had been through was unimaginable.

Dogs are sadly one of the biggest victims of abuse and neglect. They are one of the world's most popular household pets, but for some completely unknown reason, people have been known to inflict all kinds of horrors on pups.

It's unknown how many animals are abused every year...

But animal abuse and neglect have long been a problem here in the States. Thousands of animals suffer and lose their lives at the hands of careless and ignorant individuals, and it pains me truly to be writing this story.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel, however.

Millions of people around the world stand firmly against animal abuse, and there are endless animal organizations and charities out there that come together to protect our domesticated friends.

A fresh start for the unfortunate pets.

These organizations and charities rescue animals in danger and animals that are injured from abuse; they also strive to get these pets rehomed into a safe and caring environment.

According to a study conducted by a team at Best Friends Animal Society, dogs that have fallen victim to abuse and neglect are more likely to show behavioral traits such as fearfulness, aggression towards people and other dogs, hyperactivity, persistent barking, and bizarre and repetitive behaviors such as digging, spinning in circles, and hoarding.

These behaviors can make a dog dangerous.

In some cases, abused dogs have no hope of trusting humans again, which makes them aggressive and unsafe to have in a family home. Of course, this is not their fault, but it means that many families can't risk homing these poor pups. This sadly often results in euthanasia, which is always a last resort when it comes to caring for neglected animals.

This is why the kindness of strangers is needed more than ever.

Adopting a dog, rather than buying a puppy, can help to save so many lives. One group of boys decided to take it to another level.

It was a normal day in the Detroit area.

4 boys were helping people in their neighborhood, as they frequently would. The boys went to help a local woman move out when they noticed something heartbreaking... There was an abandoned dog that had been tied up to the side of the house with bungee cords.

The 4 good samaritans took it upon themselves to help the abandoned dog.

Brothers, Kenny, Kenneth, and Kevin Dancy and their friend Andrew Daniels noticed the dog shivering, and decided to rescue her.

The dog was emaciated from the cold.

They wrapped her up in a winter coat and brought her back to their home.

She finally got food and water.

The boys decided to name her Sparkle.

What a coincidence!

They just happened to cross paths with the members of Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, while walking her around the neighborhood.

The boys shared Sparkle's story with the Pit Crew.

They took her to veterinary care after noticing the pooch might be suffering from mange.

The organization thanked the boys.

In a post they uploaded to Facebook, they called them "heroes of the day."

Their act of kindness didn't go unrewarded.

“We did make sure that these youngsters receive some compensation for their efforts," said the head of the organization. The organization explains on its website, “Since October of 2013, we are a Street Crew rescue whose goal is to rescue stray dogs that are injured, sick or that are in imminent danger and need immediate medical attention."

The 4 boys didn't think of themselves as rescuers.

They admitted that they often help stray dogs by giving them food and water.

Many of DPC's Facebook followers were impressed with the boys' kindness.

Thankfully this story has a happy ending, as Sparkle was found to be clear of mange, and the publicity of the post saw Sparkle set up with a foster mum. Keep up the good work guys!
