The foster system in the USA is filled with tragedy.

On any given day, there are nearly 443,000 children in foster care in the United States.

And the children suffer as a result.

More often than not, children don’t even get a real foster home, they are, instead, sent to live in institutions or group homes.

Foster care can, sadly, be temporary.

And, as a result, children can experience very little stability while growing up.

Languishing in foster care harms children’s well-being in a number of ways.

The longer a child remains in temporary care, the more likely it is that he or she will experience multiple placement changes and disrupted relationships caused by such changes.

But one story has warmed the internet’s heart this week.

The story is being called a “real-life Matilda.”

“I was in foster care when I was 4. Then I went back to my biological mom when I was 5. Then back in foster care when I was 6,” Loralie told ABC.

I didn’t really know what to do. So I thought, ‘Well, what should I do? Is there anyone waiting for me?’ I was really scared. Until I met my mom. My second grade teacher.”

“She came into my class, and I just took one look at her – her little freckles, her little birthmark,” Zoe agreed. “I am going to adopt this little girl. She’s my daughter. The minute I set eyes on her.”

“I remember the moment when we were sitting by the car, she’s like, ‘You’re going to come with me.’ I was so surprised and happy,” Loralie recalled.

The pair made it official on Nov 20th, National Adoption Day!
