A doctor on TikTok has explained why you need to stop peeing in the shower immediately, and the reason might surprise you…
It turns out, that peeing in the shower could have some pretty bad effects on your body, according to a doctor on Tiktok. And it’s not just women that need to kick the habit…
Dr Teresa Irwin, who is a Urogynaecologist, took to TikTok to share her thoughts on the matter, and what she had to say has also been backed up by another doctor.
It turns out that if you often pee in the shower, it can have a Pavlov’s dog effect on your brain, making it difficult to resist the urge to relieve yourself when you hear running water.
“You don’t want to do it all the time because what happens is every time you hear the sound of water your bladder is going to want to pee – because it’s used to hearing the sound of the water in the shower,” Dr Irwin explained.
She added: “So whenever you’re washing your hands, washing the dishes, your bladder is going to be salivating so to speak because it wants to go and pee.”
And it turns out another doctor has also brought this up before, pelvic floor therapist, Dr Alicia Jeffrey-Thomas also made a video about peeing in the shower in 2021, although she also outlined the health risks.
“If you pee while the water is running then you’re creating an association in your brain between the sound of running water and having to pee,” Dr Jeffrey-Thomas said.
She revealed that for those with female anatomy, it is even more important not to do it as “were not designed to pee standing up.”
According to Dr Jeffrey-Thomas, “your pelvic floor isn’t going to relax properly, which means we’re really not going to be emptying our bladder super well.
“So try to pee before you ever turn on the shower water and if you get the urge to pee while you’re in there try to ignore it,” she advised.
So it’s probably best to just stick to the WC.
