Peta Murgatroyd has opened up about the devastating miscarriage she suffered while her husband was away in Ukraine.
The dancer shared her painful memories of the recent experience, and also opened up about the 2 other miscarriages she’s suffered.
Just days after testing positive for coronavirus, Murgatroyd revealed that she found herself lying on her 5-year-old son’s bedroom floor as she called for an ambulance.
“I had no strength. I couldn’t open a dishwasher. I couldn’t open the fridge to feed Shai, to get him some toast,” she told PEOPLE. “It got so bad that my breath was starting to be affected. It was really dramatic.”
Sadly, Murgatroyd was alone during this traumatic experience, as her husband, and Dancing with the Stars judge, Maks Chmerkovskiy, was away in Ukraine at the time.
After arriving at the hospital, Murgatroyd phoned Chmerkovskiy so that he could listen to what the doctor had to say about her recent ordeal.
“I thought he was going to reveal some really bad news. I was like, ‘What’s wrong?’ His face dropped,” she recalled. “He said, ‘Did you know you were pregnant?'”
At that moment, Murgatroyd said her husband “heard the doctor say, ‘You’re pregnant,'” and began to celebrate, before realizing she had just lost the baby.
“I ultimately had no idea [I was pregnant], which in hindsight was better for my recovery because I didn’t have that super joyous moment of, ‘I’m pregnant again!’ ” said Murgatroyd. “I just had the moment of, ‘You lost it.'”
Sadly, Murgatroyd has miscarried a total of 3 times over the last 2 years and is now working with a specialist in an attempt to find answers.
Along with the help of fertility doctors, the pair have started the process of in-vitro fertilization. They are hoping to give their son, Shai, siblings in the near future.
“For the first time in nearly two years, I feel excited,” said Murgatroyd, adding: “I’m in a much happier place. I got answers.”
“I don’t have any other words but hope and positivity. I’m crossing my fingers that this is going to work.”
We’re keeping our fingers crossed for them too!
