Jonshel Alexander died over the weekend after she was reportedly shot.

Alexander was reportedly shot and killed following an incident in Louisiana, People reports.

She is best known for her role in the Oscar-nominated 2012 film, Beasts of the Southern Wild.

Beasts of the Southern Wild was a film that focused on the story of a poor bayou community that lived outside of New Orleans’ storm levee system.

Alexander played the role of Joy Strong in the movie when she was just twelve years old.

The outlet reports that when auditioning for the role, Alexander beat around 4,000 other people.

As per ABC News, Alexander’s mom said her daughter charmed the filmmakers and they “fell in love” with her.

“She was like, ‘I’m going to be in this movie.’ They fell in love with Jonshel.”

Director Benh Zeitlin said he was devastated to hear of her death, the outlet reports.

“Her character in the film is named Joy Strong, which always seemed like a perfect description of Jonshel. She was a really bright burning light.”

Alexander reportedly died after she was shot while sat inside of a car, ABC News reports.

She was sitting inside of a vehicle with a man on Saturday in New Orleans when a shooter approached them.

The man, whose name was not released, was injured but able to drive to the hospital.

Alexander was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation is currently under way with investigators asking the public for any help or information on the case.

Alexander is survived by her mom and siblings as well as her 1-year-old daughter, People reports.
