Alanis Morrisette is known for her confessional lyrics and a layered rock-influenced sound.

Her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill established her as one of alternative rock’s foremost female vocalists of the 1990s.

But before that Morrisette debuted as an actress on Nickelodeon’s show: You Can’t Do That.

She reportedly used her earnings from that show to cut her first single and at the age of fourteen, Morissette signed a song-publishing deal that led to 2 dance-pop albums, Alanis in 1991, which sold at least 100,000 copies.

She earned herself Canada’s Juno Award for most promising female vocalist of the year and Now Is the Time 1992, which sold more than 50,000 copies.

She escaped the pressures of her then-fading teen career and then left home after high school to develop a more personally satisfying musical style.

Morrisette eventually settled in Los Angeles, where she met Glen Ballard, a veteran songwriter-producer.

Together the 2 wrote and recorded Jagged Little Pill, and set her emotionally raw lyrics against a polished rock backdrop.

She then released the album, which she considered her “real” debut, and even signed with Madonna’s label, Maverick.

She then had a string of hit singles including the explosive: ‘You Oughta Know’, but ‘Jagged Little Pill’ sold more than sixteen million copies in the United States and topped charts around the world.

In 1996 Morissette won 4 Grammy Awards with Jagged Little Pill named album of the year and best rock album and ‘You Oughta Know’ earning honors for best rock song and best female rock vocal performance.

Morissette’s other recordings included Flavors of Entanglement in 2008, Havoc and Bright Lights in 2012, and Such Pretty Forks in the Road in 2020.

The forty-eight-year-old revealed on Audacy’s Gary Bryan Morning Show that her daughter, Onyx, prefers to call her by her full name.

Morissette also mentioned how her 2 sons Ever Imre, eleven, and Winter Mercy, 3, have picked up on the habit, as well as revealing that they are fans of her music.

“They do [listen], even when I’m like ‘shut that off!’” the singer joked, adding, “they’re so sweet.”

She then mentioned how her daughter calls her by her full name…

“My daughter has taken to calling me by my full name because she notices that no one uses my full name when we’re in personal environments,” Morissette said.

“So instead of saying ‘mom,’ she’ll say, ‘Alanis Morissette,’” she added.
