Alec Baldwin has just announced he has “quit” Twitter following a surge of backlash over his “disgusting” joke about The Crown actress, Gillian Anderson…
And he claims that the platform is full of “a** holes.”
Yikes. Here’s the full story…
Now, we all know and love Alec Baldwin for being the fun-loving actor and comedian that he is…
And in the last few weeks, there seems to have been nothing but good news for Baldwin and his family.
The actor and his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, welcomed their sixth child via surrogacy earlier this week…
And fans from far and wide have been sending in messages of congratulations for the happy couple.
But the well-wishes weren’t to last…
As the 30 Rock actor recently made a rather distasteful joke that hasn’t sat well with his fans.
Because we all know that the actor is known for not being afraid to push boundaries in the name of comedy, right?
For instance, Baldwin received critical acclaim for his portrayal of former POTUS Donald Trump on the long-running sketch series Saturday Night Live, both during the latter part of the 2016 U.S. presidential election campaign and following the inauguration.
This controversial role won him his third Primetime Emmy in 2017.
But it seems as if his most recent joke was a step too far…
As it was about The Crown actress Gillian Anderson’s accent.
People weren’t impressed with the distasteful joke…
So, what exactly was the joke about?
Well, as you will all be aware, Sunday welcomed the seventy-eighth Golden Globes Awards and although they were held partially virtual, there were lots of big winners… Including Gillian Anderson!
Anderson won the Supporting Actress in a Series Award for her performance as British Prime Minister, Margret Thatcher, in Netflix’s The Crown…
A very well deserved award, might we add.
But the thing that many fans don’t know about Anderson is that in real life, she doesn’t speak using the British accent she often uses in her roles.
Because the actress grew up in both the U.K and the U.S, she often speaks naturally with an American accent.
Well, this is something that Baldwin decided to poke some fun at.
After she accepted her award and her American accent was heard, Baldwin tweeted this:
“Switching accents? That sounds… Fascinating.”
It’s important to note that Baldwin’s joke comes just weeks after he defended his wife for often switching between her own Spanish and American accents…
Which many fans found contradictory and arrogant.
After seeing the anger caused, Baldwin decided to post an Instagram video to announce his “Twitter exit” by deactivating his Twitter account.
In the ten-minute video, the actor said he decided to leave the platform because “haters” were not understanding the “irony” behind his comment about Anderson.
“Of course you can’t do any irony on Twitter, you can’t do irony in the United States anymore because the United States is such an uptight, stressed-out place and such an unpleasant place right now.”
Baldwin then said that Twitter “is where all the a**holes in the United States and beyond go to get their advanced degrees in a**holiness.”
