And it’s safe to say that the couple’s eye-opening revelations hit everyone hard.

For example…

1. Meghan admitted to going into her marriage to Prince Harry very “naively.”

She told Oprah that she didn’t do much research into the monarchy and it’s customs before settling down with Harry.

“I didn’t grow up knowing much about the royal family,” she admitted.

“It wasn’t something that was part of the conversation at home. It wasn’t something we followed.”
She explained how, in the States, a lot of people romanticize the idea of being a royal, like it’s something out of a fairytale when, in actual fact, it’s completely different.

She also explained how she “never looked up [her] husband online.”

“I just didn’t feel the need to because everything that I needed to know, he was sharing with me – or everything we thought I needed to know, he was telling me.”
Meghan also revealed that she and Harry got married 3 days prior to the televised wedding so they could have a “moment” to themselves.

2. Meghan detailed her shock over having to curtsy Queen Elizabeth even behind the scenes.

Meghan was first introduced to her soon-to-be relatives, including the Queen, when the pair were invited for lunch at the Royal Lodge, where Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew live.

“Right, do you know how to curtsy?” Harry asked Meghan upon finding out that she would be meeting his grandmother.

But Meghan was confused because she thought curtsying was just an official move.
“I genuinely thought that was what happens outside. I thought that was part of the fanfare. I didn’t think that was what happens inside. And I said, ‘But it’s your grandmother,’ and he said, ‘It’s the Queen.'”

3. Meghan opened up about experiencing suicidal thoughts.

After marrying into the royal family, the expectant mother heartbreakingly revealed that she had “suicidal thoughts.”

“I was ashamed to say it at the time and ashamed to have to admit it to Harry.”

“But I knew that if I didn’t say it – then I would do it.”
She then revealed that she faced tremendous backlash in the press which made her spiral downwards.

“I just didn’t want to be alive anymore,” she added. “That was a clear and real and frightening and constant thought.”

Meghan also revealed that during this dark time, she had spoken to another senior royal who informed her that she couldn’t seek help for mental health because it would look bad on the family as a whole.

3. Meghan made Harry realize he was “trapped.”

When Oprah asked Harry if he would have been able to step down from his royal duties without Meghan, he said that he wouldn’t have.

His response was actually very concerning…

“I wouldn’t have been able to, because I myself was trapped as well. I didn’t see a way out… No matter who you are in the family, no matter what’s going on in your personal life, no matter what’s just happened, if the bikes roll up and the car rolls up you’ve got to get dressed, you’ve got to get in there, wipe the tears away, shake off whatever you’re thinking about, and you’ve got to be on your A-game.”

He also added how he has “compassion” for his brother and his father.

“They don’t get to leave. And I have huge compassion for that.”

4. Harry was cut off financially at the start of 2020.

The Prince revealed that the couple was cut off financially from the family after they made the announcement to step back from their royal duties and, since then, have been living off the inheritance of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana.

He explained:

“I’ve got all my mom left me. And without that, we would not have been able to do this. She saw it coming, and I certainly felt her presence throughout this whole process.”

5. Meghan was “silenced” by the royal family.

“I’ve always been outspoken, especially about women’s rights, and that’s the sad irony of the last 4 years, I’ve advocated for so long for women to use their voice.”

Meghan then said this:

“That was hard to reconcile because it was only once we were married and everything started to really worsen that I came to understand that not only was I not being protected, but that they were willing to lie to protect other members of the family. They weren’t willing to tell the truth to protect me and my husband.”

6. Kate Middleton was the one to make Meghan cry, not the other way around.

via Getty

Before this interview, there were several reports that Meghan had made her sister-in-law, Kate Middleton, cry when in fact, it was the other way around.

She said she found the narrative “shocking,” when she saw it in the press.

She also referred to it as the “beginning of a character assassination.”

While she didn’t go into too much detail about the actual incident, she did say that the 2 made up after it.

via Getty

“I don’t say that to be disparaging to anyone, because it was a really hard week of the wedding, and she was upset about something. But she owned it, and she apologized, and she brought me flowers and a note apologizing”, but she did say that the situation “made [her] cry” and “hurt her feelings.”

7. There were actual concerns over Archie’s skin color.

Meghan and Harry said that prior to Archie’s birth in 2019, there had been months of conversations about his potential skin color. Meghan told Oprah this:
“In those months when I was pregnant, all around this same time, we have in tandem the conversation of he won’t be given security, he’s not going to be given a title, and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.”

Some had even gone as far as wondering “what that would mean or look like” if their son had dark skin.

The couple said they would never name the people that made these comments because they “think that would be very damaging to them.”

“That conversation I’m never going to share,” Harry later added when he joined the interview. “At the time, it was awkward. I was a bit shocked.”

Of course, there has been a flurry of support on social media following the explosive interview…

With people expressing both their love for the couple, and their disgust with the monarchy.

Serena Williams is among those.

Writing on Twitter, Serena said that Meghan “lives her life – and leads by example – with empathy and compassion,” before adding: “Her words illustrate the pain and cruelty she’s experienced.
“I know first hand the sexism and racism institutions and the media use to vilify women and people of color to minimize us, to break us down and demonize us. We must recognize our obligation to decry malicious, unfounded gossip and tabloid journalism. The mental health consequences of systemic oppression and victimization are devastating, isolating and all too often lethal.”
“I want Meghan’s daughter, my daughter, and your daughter to live in a society that is driven by respect.”

And as for the latest person to express their support?

In a message shared on her website, Beyoncé wrote: “Thank you Meghan for your courage and leadership. We are all strengthened and inspired by you.”

Alongside the text, she shared a picture of the pair from when they met at the London premiere of the Lion King in 2019.

In separate post on the website this week, Beyoncé praised 12 women that she deemed to be “rule breakers.”

Among those were Stacey Abrams, Jane Fonda, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Meghan…

She wrote: “For those who created their own way to tell their stories, found other avenues to get to the destinations, and broke every rule in the process, We See You! We salute each and every one of you on this International Women’s Day.”
