These days it seems as though the world is obsessed with what Billie Eilish is wearing. Whether it’s an oversized T-shirt or a beautiful ball gown, everyone holds an opinion on her style.
However, this time, a corset and lace bra combo has left everyone speechless…
While some commended her look, others were disgusted.
And now Billie, herself, has spoken out on the issue, and she opened up about how it felt to receive that hate…
Have a look for yourselves…
Aged just nineteen, Billie Eilish has taken the music industry by storm.
She’s been writing and creating her own music since she was incredibly young, and has risen to fame with the huge hit album When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? that was released in March, 2019.
She’s known for being somewhat of a quirky character…
Billie was home-schooled, so she didn’t get the chance to interact with others of her own age apart from her siblings until she started to make waves in the music scene, which has given her something of a unique outlook on the world.
Many are pretty shocked that such a young person could create such hauntingly catchy tunes – and such suggestive lyrics.
Her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? ranked at number 1 on the charts.
Most artists have to release a couple of albums and dedicate their lives to promoting their work before they are even recognized as an artist, but then there’s a lucky few, like Billie, who reach superstardom on their first attempt.
When the album was released, she wrote, “This album [means] the world to me please take care of it.”
Her introductory EP, Don’t Smile at Me, went all the way to slot fourteen, and has already been awarded gold, an achievement that many artists can only dream of receiving.
But, it’s safe to say, Billie is as famous for her image as she is for her music…
She doesn’t dress like your typical nineteen-year-old, that’s for sure.
She is known for rocking some pretty brave looks…
Like this full white suit complete with Powerpuff Girl embroidery, which she pairs with some signature tiny sunglasses.
Weird – but it kind of works?
We have to say, love it or hate it, you can’t deny Billie’s commitment to her unique style – and that’s not something many of us are brave enough to pull off.
And Billie doesn’t just experiment with fashion…
The star is no stranger to getting creative with her hair – opting for more out there looks and colors to fit her quirky aesthetic.
If anything, it was this look that became her trademark around 2017.
And we can’t forget about this eye-catching look either, can we?
Neon green roots? Very brave.
But it turns out there was a reason behind Billie’s quirky look…
Her choices in fashion – which strongly consist of baggy, oversized clothes – are picked to protect herself from her global audience body-shaming her and judging her on her natural appearance.
“That’s why I wear baggy clothes,” she said.
“Nobody can have an opinion because they haven’t seen what’s underneath. Nobody can be like, ‘she’s slim-thick,’ ‘she’s not slim-thick,’ ‘she’s got a flat a**,’ ‘she’s got a fat a**.’ No one can say any of that because they don’t know.”
And we honestly don’t blame Billie for having had this attitude.
But sadly, people have already attempted to exploit and body-shame the teenager.
Even when she was as young as fifteen, online trolls were trying to sexualize her for no apparent reason.
And it is a harsh reality that young women in the spotlight are always targeted by older people.
But, when discussing the topic, Billie has said in the past that she didn’t want to remain covered up forever.
“I’m going to be a woman. I want to show my body,” Eilish told Elle in an interview last year. “What if I want to make a video where I want to look desirable?”
She said that, upon turning eighteen, she wanted the option to sometimes reveal her body.
But she already understood the repercussions a move like that could bring.
“I know it would be a huge thing,” she said in the interview, adding, “I know people will say, ‘I’ve lost all respect for her.'”
And that’s pretty much exactly what happened.
As soon as the singer started getting more experimental with her fashion choices, it seems as though she had to face the harsh reality of being judged by critics as well as her fans.
And there was one picture in particular that gained her a lot of attention for how risque it was.
Billie posted a picture to her Instagram account a few weeks ago showing herself wearing a Miaou tomato-print corset with a lace bra peeking out from the top and apparently the internet just couldn’t handle her “big b**bs.”
According to Molly Lambert via Elle, comments slamming the “everything i wanted” singer poured in, with some even calling her “disingenuous.”
“People hold on to these memories and have an attachment. But it’s very dehumanizing.”
“I lost 100,000 followers, just because of the b**bs. People are scared of big b**bs,” Billie concluded.
Lambert also added that the nineteen-year-old’s experiences are far from “unique” because these toxic double standards have been going on for so long within the industry.
“Billie started off in a non-sexualized category, not pandering to the masses and not using her sexuality in any way, which is her choice and God bless her for that—after all, she’s been a teenager all this time. [But] if she wants to turn around and take photographs where she is portrayed as a feminine woman, showing her body in a way that she hasn’t in the past, then why should she be punished for it?”
“If Billie were a man, no one would be writing about this,” Lambert added.
And it’s true. Everyone would praise him for “re-inventing himself” as they have done on multiple occasions, but when it’s a woman who is exploring her own identity and femininity as she grows, society sl**-shames her into her clothes only to tell her to take them off again.
Make it make sense, please.
Thankfully, a lot of Billie’s fans offered their support during this difficult period.
You got this, Billie!
We can’t wait to see what kind of look she’s going to wow us with next.
