Billie Eilish wants the media–and her fans–to focus on things other than her sexuality.
When you’re a celebrity, anything you say can and will be used against you. In Billie Eilish’s case, that means accidentally coming out after thinking everyone already knew she liked girls.
On Dec. 2, the artist confirmed that she recently came out in her Variety Power of Women cover story, which is when she first publicly revealed her attraction to women.
The Grammy-winner walked the red carpet at Variety‘s Hitmakers event on Saturday, which is where she revealed that she didn’t actually mean for her “coming out” to be a big deal.
“No I didn’t,” Eilish said when asked if she intended on coming out. “But I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious’? I didn’t realize people didn’t know.”
She continued, “I just don’t really believe in it. I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist’? I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”
“But I saw the article, and I was like, ‘Oh I guess I came out today.’ OK cool,” she explained. “It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, but it’s cool that they know. I am for the girls.”
This confirmation comes after her Variety profile in November, when Billie first spoke about her feelings for women.
“I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well,” she said before revealing her attraction. “I love them so much.”
“I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people,” she continued. “I’m attracted to them for real.”
“I have deep connections with women in my life, the friends in my life, the family in my life,” she explained at the time.
“I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence,” Eilish expanded.
At the Hitmakers event on Saturday, the singer received the prize for Film Song of the Year alongside her brother Finneas for “What Was I Made For,” which was featured in the summer blockbuster Barbie.
On the red carpet, Variety’s Tiana DeNicola asked Billie if her perspective on how other women feel about her has changed after the publication of the story–but that doesn’t seem to be so.
“I’m still scared of them, but I think they’re pretty,” Eilish replied.
While she didn’t seem too upset about the questions about her sexuality while on the red carpet, it seems like Billie isn’t a big fan of her “coming out” being such a big story.
Following all of the commotion surrounding her reveal that she’s attracted to women, she took to Instagram to post about Variety “outing” her on the red carpet.
The singer posted a photo dump from the the magazine’s annual Hitmakers Brunch, and in her caption, she slammed the site for focusing on the wrong things.
“Thanks variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters,” She began in her caption.
Billie continued, “I like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares stream ‘what was i made for’”
Since her unofficial coming out, Eilish’s follower count on Instagram has dropped by a whopping six figures and stood at 110,200,603 as of Dec. 3.
That figure means the “bad guy” singer lost more than 100,000 followers after revealing that she is attracted to women.
Of that 100,000, just under 45,000 of those followers dropped off since Saturday, when Eilish confirmed in her red carpet interview that she had, in fact, come out, even if by accident.
Unfortunately for Billie, this isn’t the first time that she has lost over six figures in followers in a short amount of time.
Just a couple years ago, the singer lost 100,000 followers because of a cover shoot she did with British Vogue, in which she wore a corset.
While speaking about the surprising loss in followers, Eilish told Elle, “I lost 100,000 followers just because of boobs. People are scared of big boobs.
Of course, many fans are used to the singer sporting oversized clothes, which had been her signature look for many years as she first launched her career.
Now that she’s exploring different avenues, including her sexuality, it looks like many fans can’t handle it. But, the artist still has over 100 million followers, so she’s clearly doing just fine.
