These furry felines are some of the nation’s favorite pets... And if you say you hate them, you're lying to yourself.

Yes, cats have some serious competition with dogs...

But, as it turns out, the beloved cat is actually a more popular choice of a pet than the high-maintenance and, quite frankly, needy dog.

Not only are they adorable...

Cats are also very independent pets who are capable of looking after themselves and generally creating a minimal fuss in the house.

There are hundreds of breeds of cat across the globe...

And there are new ones being discovered every day.

Many draw in significant attention for donning unique features...

Take these "Poodle Cats," for instance.

There's a huge market for Instagram famous cats...

Some cats, like Munchie, here, live with dwarfism, which leaves them resembling kittens for their entire lives... But they achieve an awful lot of fame in the process.

But there are some cats who are popular for their rather unique fur patterning.

Hamilton the Hipster Cat shot to viral stardom for his unique hipster moustache patterning that is perfectly positioned under his nose.

But, out of all the unusual fur patterns out there...

There is one cat with perhaps the most unique fur of them all.

This is Scrappy...

And when he was bought by his owner, David, in 1997, he didn't look like this... at all.

Scrappy was originally a black cat.

Speaking with Meowbox in 2015, by which point Scrappy had reached the grand old age of eighteen, David described his cat as "extraordinary." "Scrappy was sitting on his own and, though he was a beautiful cat, we didn`t think others would regard him to be as cute as his siblings. I made the decision to take Scrappy as I knew he would be the last one to be taken, if at all."

But when Scrappy reached the age of 7...

His black fur began sprouting white patches... giving him an unusual but unique marble effect.

This didn't at all affect Scrappy's boisterous nature, however...

"Scrappy is a total diva! He isn’t the best cat to take photos of as most of the time he looks the other way or walks away… He can also be quite grumpy at times," David explained.

And soon enough...

Scrappy was completely covered head-to-toe in spotted black and white fur... giving him the most unique and stunning appearance.

People were transfixed, to say the least...

And fellow cat-lovers and pet-owners started speaking out about similar experiences with their own cats.

David sought a professional opinion...

And it was eventually thought that Scrappy’s updated look was due to vitiligo, a genetic mutation that is extremely rare in cats.

It’s unclear exactly why vitiligo occurs in cats...

But it’s believed it can arise when something interferes with melanin-producing cells in the body.

Thankfully, this never affected Scrappy's health...

And even though he sadly passed away from old age last year, he lived a long and happy life with his family.

Rest in Peace, Scrappy.
