Regardless of a person's health and size.

It's one of the cruelest things a person can do...

There really isn't anything quite as self-esteem crushing as being body-shamed.

Yet despite us living in 2021, where self-love is more embraced than ever, this kind of hate is still happening...

Of course, the majority of body-shaming happens on social media but believe it or not, it actually happens within close friendship and relationship circles.

So many people are sadly shamed by their friends or partners...

And this is exactly what happened recently on an Australian dating show.

Married at First Sight is, as you guessed by the title, a reality show that involves 2 strangers getting married.

8 singles, who are selected by psychologists and therapists, are matched with a stranger who is deemed as the most compatible for them before getting married and going through an "accelerated relationship cycle."

After around a month of being together, the couples then decide if they want to stay married or get a divorce.

And believe it or not, there have actually been some success stories on the show!

By the time season 10 of the Australian-based show rolled around, 8 couples remained happily married to one another, according to LifeTime.

But of course, not all of the Married at First Sight stories end in romance...

And one of the more recently arranged marriages resulted in an unfortunate bride taking a major self-esteem hit thanks to her new groom.

Twenty-nine-year-old Elizabeth Sobinoff was matched with model Sam Ball on series 6 of the reality show in 2019...

And the young woman was in for a total and utter whirlwind.

Not only did her new husband ditch her just days after tying the knot...

But he also made some extremely painful comments about her body shape to his best men, which was all caught on camera and understandably, caused a lot of anger.

So, what exactly did Sam say about his new bride?

Firstly speaking to the camera, Sam said that he was just taking Lizzie for "who she is" and not for her "body image."

He was then seen saying to his best men, "She's obviously not as slim as the girls I've dated in the past, she's a bit bigger. Maybe I'll get her running in the mornings or something, drag her out of bed... But she'll be alright, we'll get her going."

FYI, Sam is a model who is very image-focused...

And the comments that he made immediately exposed him as the cruel and shallow person he is.

Of course, it didn't take long for these degrading comments to make their way to poor Lizzie...

And even though she insisted that she "loves her shape", the young woman has since embarked on an alarming diet and gym regime to lose some weight.

She started by ditching the blonde extensions for a more natural brunette style...

And she decided to opt for the 5:2 diet, which involved eating less than 600 calories a day on 2 consecutive days every week.

It doesn't sound very healthy, we know...

And the results soon started to show with Lizzie looking considerably thinner and thinner as the months went by.

Additionally, she started hitting the gym several times a week in a bid to "reduce stress"...

Because let's face it, we'd all be feeling a little bit stressed if our new husbands completely insulted our appearances and then walked out on us a few days later!

Overall, Lizzie ended up losing over 1 and a half stone.

Speaking of her new look, she said:

"It's still very much me. I know people are going to say, 'Well, you look completely different to how we saw you [on the show]' – but don't always focus on the outer shell."

"This has always been me. We grow, as people. I don't glorify weight [loss] and be like, 'I'm better now'."

Lizzie also explained that she suffers from 2 chronic health conditions that cause her weight to regularly fluctuate - She suffers from porphyria, a blood disorder that affects the liver and other organs, and also has a mild form of Lupus, which is an autoimmune disease.

All that matters is Lizzie's happiness...

But we must say, it's terribly sad to see all of the hard work and effort she put in all at the expense of a man's negative and cruel comments about her weight.

Nobody should ever feel that they have to lose weight because of another person's opinion...

And Lizzie's story is a prime example of that. You can watch her appearance on A Current Affair above.
