A builder recently discovered a hidden note from 1941 in the roof of a church, and it contained some handy advice for future generations.

What kind of advice would you give the people of the future?

Would you tell them to savor their time with their parents? Would you instruct them to put down their phones and Ipads? Or would you simply tell them to get out and explore the world?

But sadly, the likelihood of anyone actually seeing your carefully curated list of tips is pretty slim.

And, when we do, they’re often too eroded or damaged to even be distinguishable.

A builder in Antwerp, Belgium, recently came across a hidden note that had been written and tucked away in the roof of a church seventy-nine whole years ago.

The note, which was stored neatly in the matchbox pictured above, was somehow in a good enough condition to be read.

And discovered the matchbox delicately placed inside of an ornament hanging from the towering ceiling.

And provided a grim insight into the poor conditions previous workers had endured and words of wisdom for those who would later find it.

With the caption: “Unbelievable. This workman found a note from 1941 in St. James’ Church with a catchy message.”

John Janssen, Jul Gyselinck, Louis Chantraine, and Jul Van Hemeldonck, who explain how they had worked on the same ceiling seventy-nine-years-ago.

On the back of a work coupon, the men had written: “When this ceiling will have to painted again we will no longer be on this earth.”

“We have to tell the following generations that we didn’t have a happy life. We’ve lived through two wars. One in 1914 and one in 1940, that counts for something eh?”

“We’re working here nearly starving from hunger, they extort us for mere cents for almost no food at all.”

“I want to advise the next generations when another war comes along. Have a sufficient amount of food in excess like rice, coffee, flour, tobacco, grains, wheat, to keep you alive.”

“Enjoy life to the fullest and if necessary take another wife. The ones who are married: Look after your home! Salut men!” For more amazing, yet unexpected discoveries, keep scrolling…
