Track star Cameron Burrell's death has been ruled as suicide after his body was inspected by a medical examiner, TMZ reports.
Burrell, who was only 26 years old at the time of his death, had earned the moniker 'America's Fastest College Athlete', and was on course to achieve big things with Team USA.
TMZ reports that a "gunshot wound of the head" was listed as the cause of death.
The news of the athlete's death was heartbreaking for many, but none more so than his family.
Leroy Burrell, Cameron's dad, said in a statement on Tuesday: "We are going through profound sorrow and ask that all of our friends, extended University of Houston family and the track and field community in the U.S. and abroad allow us to gather with our closest family and friends.
"We are profoundly grief-stricken, and thank everyone for the outpouring of prayers and support. We will forward more information when it is available."
