Candy Company Forced To Comment on Petition Signed by Thousands to Ban Gay Kiss Commercial

Since the rise and increasing acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community, embracing individuals’ identities is now encouraged more than ever, and this means displaying it in the media.

But some people fail to move with the times and a recent chocolate commercial has just proved that. So much so, that Cadbury’s has been forced to clap back…

Over 25,000 people have signed a petition trying to get it banned…

But what they failed to realize is that we’re not stuck in the 1960s anymore…

Because the ways in which we watch television are constantly evolving.

The television and film industry is rapidly diversifying, including its characters and the stories it tells, and especially in 2021, it is ensured that all forms of diversity are represented.

This includes people of color and members of the LGBTQ+ community…

In modern-day television, whether that’s children’s or adult TV, it is crucial to include different forms of diversity in order to create an accurate representation of the real world.

And this will, in turn, help to minimize ignorance and discrimination.





Well, that’s the hope, but with a lot of progressions comes a lot of questions and the most recent one involves none other than the LGBTQ+ community.

The community is now bigger than ever…

More and more young people are feeling comfortable and safe enough to come out as gay or trans as they can now come out to an incredibly supportive community of people who identify in similar ways.

The attitudes towards the community have generally improved over the years…

But sadly, there are still individuals out there who are against the LGBTQ+ community – meaning more support is needed than ever.

Despite the hate, LGBTQ+ has been represented on television for quite some time…



Who remembers Sesame Street?
The ’80s kids show was packed full of political references and adult humor, but it was announced last year that Bert and Ernie were, in fact, a gay couple.

The characters were based on life experiences…



It was reported that scriptwriter Mark Saltzman was asked if Bert and Ernie were a gay couple, he responded with:
“And I always felt that without a huge agenda, when I was writing Bert & Ernie, they were. I didn’t have any other way to contextualize them.”

Bert and Ernie’s characters were written based on Saltzman’s own relationship, in which he said:

“That’s what I had in my life, a Bert & Ernie relationship.”

The first-ever gay couple on children’s TV?



It seems so, and many more characters that held an LGBTQ+ diversity were soon to make an appearance on our screens, including the one and only Disney.

There have been many rumors surrounding certain Disney characters…



Despite there yet to be any confirmed gay Disney characters, loyal fans have drawn conclusions over certain faces such as Hades from Hercules, Ursula from The Little Mermaid, and Oaken from Frozen due to their strong gay followings.

And it isn’t only children’s TV that’s seen a change…

Movies have seen an increase in LGBTQ+ characters in all sectors but especially in the mainstream.

But not everyone has been happy with the progression in the entertainment industry.

Some people, mainly from Christian groups, have been calling for a complete ban on a new Cadbury commercial that features a gay couple sharing a chocolate egg with their mouths.

It got so bad that a petition was started to take it off the air immediately…

Posted to CitizenGO, over 25,000 people have signed it so far calling it a “highly-charged sexually provocative act” even despite their lips not touching.

However, people turned up in large numbers to defend the advert…













The petition went into more detail as to why people were outraged writing this:

“By choosing to feature a same-sex couple, Cadbury’s are clearly hoping to cause controversy and escape criticism, by claiming that any objections must be rooted in ‘homophobia’, but members of the LGBT community have also expressed their dislike of this campaign.”

It continued:

“Cadbury’s should not be seeking to hide under cover of LGBT rights to conduct a campaign which sexually objectifies individuals. If the couple in question were heterosexual, the advertisement would likely be prohibited, given the sexually explicit and graphic nature of the kiss.”

It also added:

​”Cadbury’s are well aware of the religious significance of Easter. Therefore, they are trying to cause gratuitous offense to members of the Christian community during the most important feast in their calendar.”

One half of the gay couple featured in the advert responded to the news saying this:

​”So it’s OK when an advert sexualizes a woman… to benefit the male gaze and make other women feel inadequate if they do not live up to this beauty standard,” Sterling wrote. “But it’s not OK, in 2021, to have an advert of a multi-racial (strike one) gay couple (strike two) on your screens for 10 seconds (strike three) eating/kissing/sexualized (strike four). Does anyone see how ridiculous this is? Like actual LOL.”

Cadbury also defended the couple highlighting that they are a “progressive brand that spreads a message of inclusion.”

“We are proud of our Golden Goobilee advert which celebrates the many ways that everyone can enjoy a Cadbury Creme Egg. To illustrate this and showcase the joy our products bring, a clip of a real life couple sharing a Cadbury Creme Egg was included in the advert.”
