Giving dogs chocolate can cause pain and even death as it contains the chemical, theobromine, as well as caffeine, both of which are things that dogs can not metabolize well.

However, the Smiths Station Animal Hospital in Alabama has gone viral for doing just that…

The animal hospital posted to Facebook a picture of a jar of chocolates with the words “goodbye kisses” written on the jar.

The post was written by Dr. Nicole Namie who is one of the 3 veterinarians at the animal hospital.

KPTV reports that the chocolates that dogs who are about to be put down. Alongside the picture, they wrote: “This jar is reserved for our euthanasia appointments… Because no dog should go to Heaven without tasting chocolate.”

Since being posted online earlier this month, the post has received more than 125,000 shares and 13,000 comments, many of which are from pet owners who have also experienced loss.

“It was truffled eggs and an early 15th birthday pupcake for our Bonnie (west highland terrier) on her last day. Followed by her favorite, smoked salmon just before our vet arrived. We said goodbye 2 weeks ago today. I held her in my arms as she passed and our noses nuzzled while I felt her last breaths. Miss you my darling girl,” one Facebook user wrote.

“My girl is now 16 and dealing with renal issues. I know I don’t have long with her but when the time comes she will get one of her cerenia and whatever treats she wants,” wrote another.
