CNN has fired anchor Chris Cuomo after details came to light surrounding his involvement with his brother, the former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Chris Cuomo was initially suspended indefinitely by CNN before their decision emerged just hours ago to fire the legendary anchor.
Documents released by New York Attorney General, Letitia James, reveal that Chris frequently asked his brother’s team to let him play a larger role in his brother’s defense, the BBC reports.
Chris has previously admitted that he helped his brother while dealing with the allegations, but he always maintained that his involvement was minimal. However, the documents revealed that Chris was further involved than he previously admitted.
Before their decision to fire him, a spokesperson for CNN explained that “the New York Attorney General’s office released transcripts and exhibits” that have shed a “new light on Chris Cuomo’s involvement in his brother’s defense.”
“The documents, which we were not privy to before their public release, raise serious questions.”
The spokesperson continued to add that Cuomo admitted that “he had offered advice to his brother’s staff” which turn meant that “he broke our rules and we acknowledged that publicly.”
“But we also appreciated the unique position he was in and understood his need to put family first and job second,” they said.
They then noted that the documents revealed Cuomo had “a greater level of involvement in his brother’s efforts than we previously knew.”
“As a result, we have suspended Chris indefinitely, pending further evaluation.”
But now CNN have decided to fire Cuomo.
Late Saturday, the news emerged that CNN had decided to fire Cuomo ‘effective immediately’, putting an end to his reign as the networks top rated host.
Confirming their decision, CNN shared a statement reading:
“Chris Cuomo was suspended earlier this week pending further evaluation of new information that came to light about his involvement with his brother’s defense. We retained a respected law firm to conduct the review, and have terminated him, effective immediately.”
“While in the process of that review, additional information has come to light. Despite the termination, we will investigate as appropriate.”
CNN did not add further comment on the ‘additional information’ at the time of writing.
However the New York Times have reported that just days ago, CNN was informed of a client with an allegation of sexual misconduct against Chris Cuomo.
Prominent employment lawyer, Debra Katz, informed CNN of the allegation.
Ms. Katz claimed that the allegation against the anchor, which was made by a former junior colleague at another network, was ‘unrelated to the Gov. Andrew Cuomo matter’.
