A couple has divided the internet after they refused to swap seats with a child who was “scared” of flying.
The couple where asked to switch seats by the child’s mom.
But, having paid more to pick their seats on the airplane, the couple refused.
And after sharing the situation online, it has divided people’s opinions…
Some people have defended the couple’s decision to not move as they wrote: “You’re not being unreasonable. If I hadn’t paid and had just happened to be sitting next to DP [dear partner], I might consider moving. But there’s no way would I move when I paid money for those seats!”
Another person added: “If seats made ‘no difference’ then she should have applied the same reasoning to herself. And if her dd [dear daughter] ‘was scared of flying and a minor’ then she should have forked out for pre-booked seats.”
But while some defended the couple, others defended the mom’s right to ask.
One person wrote online: “She’s got the right to ask, you’ve got the right to say no.”
While another added: “Not unreasonable. Just uncharitable. You’re allowed to be mean. People are allowed to judge you for it. Personally I would have swapped for the sake of a child. My partner is an adult and can survive a whole flight without me holding his hand.
“You value money and the entitlements it gives you more than a stranger’s child’s feelings. The privilege is all yours. Own it.”
The situation was shared online by the couple asking if they were in the wrong.
Taking to Mumsnet, the person explained they were on a flight to Gran Canaria when the incident occurred.
They said that they had “booked mine and boyfriends seats” ahead of the flight and it had cost them an additional sum of £22 ($28).
They had selected two seats, one by the window and one in the middle.
On the seat beside the couple sat a lady and her daughter sat on the row in front.
“She asked could they have our two seats and we have hers /daughters or my boyfriend switch with her daughter,” the person explained.
They said they “politely said no” to swapping seats.
“Which she wasn’t happy about,” they wrote.
After refusing to move, the woman is said to have asked the couple “what difference does it make.”
Before she then added: “Your adults, my daughter is scared of flying and is a minor.”
The person explained that they still didn’t move from their seats as they asked if they were in the wrong.
The person also added that “If she was that bothered she could have paid like us.”
What do you think? Were they in the wrong for refusing to move seats?
