We know them as the couple goals from the hit sitcom Friends. But 17 years after the final episode aired, genealogists have looked into the actors past and found some really interesting connections…
We know them as the loved up couple from the hit sitcom Friends.
They captured the nation with their strong and hilarious relationship, originally starting with that night in London.
Everyone loved their relationship on screen.
The actors, Matthew Perry (Chandler) and Courteney Cox (Monica), took us through every part of the relationship, from the moment they got together, to their marriage and then the birth of their twins in the final series.
Matthew and Courtney are still close friends.
There have even been rumours they were dating in real life over the years, though nothing has ever been truly confirmed.
Matthew even admitted he was still ‘in love’ with Courtney.
Following Cox ending her relationship with Snow Patrol’s Johnny David, there was one person she reached out to first. You’re right, our very own Chandler Bing. After being so close for ten years while filming Friends, he was the first person she reached out to when she was feeling vulnerable. Sources say that the closeness of their friendship made him the ideal person to call.
However, we’ve now found out they’re definitely more than friends…
According to ancestry reports, the golden couple’s bond runs way deeper than we ever imagined. Researchers at online genealogy website ‘MyHeritage’ have dug into their past and unearthed some outstanding connections.
So yeah, they’re related!
They are in fact eleventh cousins. The actors both share an ancestor called Ellen Haskell. She was an English woman who emigrated to the US with her two sons when they were still British colonies in 1635.
Their ancestry stretches back to the 17th Century.
The sons, Roger and Matthew, had their own families that went their separate ways. According to MyHeritage researchers, Courteney Cox is a direct descendant of Roger on her mother’s side, whereas Matthew comes from the side of Matthew.
It’s apparently more common than you think…
The genealogists took the news to CNN, and explained that while the fact that the pair are distantly related may be shocking to fans, the chances of such a link are actually higher than you might think.
The chances are higher the further you go back.
“We went into this line very deeply, we checked every name. We found a lot of records that support it, and we have confidence that they are related. This is not such a surprise. It makes sense that when you go so many generations back, the chances of people being connected are higher,” Roi Mandel, the head of research at MyHeritage, told CNN.
It will have taken billions of historical records to find the link.
There were hundreds of entries including birth, death and marriage certificates as well as immigration records to prove the link, which apparently also connects Cox and Perry to another famous New Yorker – Lady Gaga.
It seemed though that people were unsure of the link…
However, it’s rumoured that more of Hollywood is connected.
During an episode of PBS’ “Finding Your Roots”, Larry David found out he was a distant relative of politician Bernie Sanders. Madonna and Hilary Clinton are 10th cousins and the Royal Duchess Kate Middleton is a distant cousin of talkshow host Ellen Degeneres.
The news of their shared history comes on the date of the reunion.
You can stream the Friends Reunion now on HBO Max.
