Dakota Johnson Says No One Would’ve Filmed ‘Fifty Shades’ if They Knew What the Set Drama Entailed

Dakota Johnson has described some truly bizarre behind-the-scenes secrets from the set of Fifty Shades

“The book is an untrue and unsafe depiction of BDSM relationships, to begin with. It was Twilight fanfiction which wasn’t great writing, to begin with, either,” one fan wrote.

“I couldn’t watch it… Seen too many women groomed while they thought it was sexy and they were being cared for only to end up being abused. That’s a very short version but to the point!” added another.

Now Dakota Johnson comes from Hollywood royalty.

She’s the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith!

She began acting at the tender age of ten.

Johnson started with minor roles in the dark comedy film Crazy in Alabama (1999) and The Social Network (2010).

But things all changed when she was cast as Anastasia Steele.

Johnson played the role in all 3 Fifty Shades movies.

Fifty Shades was an absolute phenomenon.

It first began life as a Twilight fan fiction, which was developed into the bestselling book series.

Since her breakthrough role, Johnson has been in many successful movies.

Including the romantic comedy How to Be Single (2016), the horror film Suspiria (2018), the thriller Bad Times at the El Royale (2018), and the coming-of-age movie The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019).

But for many, she’ll always be remembered for her original role.

Johnson beat out big names like Lucy Hale, Felicity Jones, Elizabeth Olsen, Danielle Panabaker, and Shailene Woodley!

But the Fifty Shades movies were largely controversial.

Many viewers disagreed with the portrayal of the BDSM community, believing the film to be harmful.

“I’m proud of [the film]. I completely disagree with people who think Ana’s weak.

“I think she’s actually stronger than he is. Everything she does is her choice. And if I can be an advocate for women to do what they want to do with their bodies and not be ashamed of what they want, then I’m all for that,” Johnson said at the time.

The movies were mostly panned by critics.

Although most people agreed that Johnson was the franchise’s one redeeming feature.

However, in recent years, Johnson has tried to distance herself from the movies.

And in a recent Vanity Fair interview, she opened up about what really went down on set.

She (hilariously) called the franchise “those big naked movies.”

“I’m a s*xual person, and when I’m interested in something, I want to know so much about it,” she said.

“That’s why I did those big naked movies.”

But this is where things got controversial.

Johnson then claimed she wasn’t happy with the end result of the films.

She was then asked the reasons for the movie’s failure.

And whether it was the fault of the studio or the directors.

“Combo,” she claimed. “It was also the author of the books.”

“She had a lot of creative control, all day, every day, and she just demanded that certain things happen.

“There were parts of the books that just wouldn’t work in a movie, like the inner monologue, which was at times incredibly cheesy,” Johnson continued.

“It wouldn’t work to say out loud.

” It was always a battle. Always,” she added.

“When I auditioned for that movie, I read a monologue from Persona.

“And I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to be really special,’” she said.

However, when Charlie Hunnam dropped out of the project, the original script was scrapped.

“I was young. I was 23. So it was scary,” Johnson said.

“It just became something crazy.

“There were a lot of different disagreements.

“I haven’t been able to talk about this truthfully ever, because you want to promote a movie the right way, and I’m proud of what we made ultimately and everything turns out the way it’s supposed to, but it was tricky.

“We’d do the takes of the movie that Erika [EL James] wanted to make, and then we would do the takes of the movie that we wanted to make,” she explained.

“The night before, I would rewrite scenes with the old dialogue so I could add a line here and there.

“It was like mayhem all the time,” she added.

Johnson was then asked if she regrets making the movies.

  via Getty Images

“No. I don’t think it’s a matter of regret.

“If I had known at the time that’s what it was going to be like, I don’t think anyone would’ve done it.

  via Getty Images

“It would’ve been like, ‘Oh, this is psychotic.’ But no, I don’t regret it,” she said.

“Look, it was great for our careers.

“So amazing. So lucky. But it was weird. So, so weird,” Johnson concluded.

What do you think?
