Did Eminem Just Reveal He Uses Grindr, a Gay Dating App?

Detroit rapper Eminem has courted controversy ever since he blasted into the zeitgeist in February 1999 with the Slim Shady LP. Via his profane alter-ego Slim Shady, the “My name is” rapper has waged insult wars with pop stars, politicians, and even a chain-smoking hand-puppet, on one occasion. He has also, at varied times been accused of homophobia.

Over the years, the rapper has had many homophobic lyrics in his songs. In 2013, for instance, he was taken to task over the perceived anti-gay sentiment in his album, Rap God.

In an interview with Rolling StoneEminem responded to the question of why he used the phrase “gay-looking” as an insult. (For the record, he also used other, harsher homophobic insults not fit for print.)
I don’t know how to say this without saying it how I’ve said it a million times. But that word, those kind of words, when I came up battle-rappin’ or whatever, I never really equated those words . . .[To actually mean ‘homosexual’]... It was more like calling someone a bitch or a punk or asshole… But the real me sitting here right now talking to you has no issues with gay, straight, transgender, at all.

Despite Eminem’s problematic lyrics, the rapper has been a vocal advocate for homosexuality in other ways. In 2010, he spoke out in favor of gay marriage, stating,  “I think if two people love each other, then what the hell? I think that everyone should have the chance to be equally miserable, if they want.”

Of course, this is the same man who kissed Elton John then went back to spitting homophobic lyrics, so – grain of salt. Still, it seems Eminem has changed from the raw, rage-filled youth that exploded onto the airways with record after record filled with violent misogyny and homophobia.

Now, he even winks at the fact that he himself might be gay. In fact, the man also known as Marshall Mathers once had a very surprising cameo on the film The Interview, where he nonchalantly came out to his interviewer, played by James Franco.

“I’m confused here because gay can mean a lot of things,” Franco says after Eminem, as himself, casually admits to being gay. “I’m a homosexual,” Eminem replies, further expanding, “I like men.”

Now, it seems Eminem is adding another pot to the fire. This week, the rapper spoke with Vulture magazine in anticipation of his new LP, Revival. During the interview, which ranged from politics (Eminem hates Trump) to his newfound maturity (he and Kim are on good terms), interviewer David Marchese asked him about his dating life.

When you were dating, how’d you meet people? Tinder? I mean, yeah.

Are you being serious? Yeah, Tinder.

Really? [Laughs] And Grindr. I also used to go to strip clubs.

Unlike The Interview, where James Franco’s interviewer grilled Eminem on his question, Marchese did not follow up, leading social media to erupt into a flurry of speculation.

Eminem was joking about using Grindr. These sites really don’t know his humor. Also, even if he is bisexual? That’s awesome. Nothing wrong with that at all. I’m heterosexual but who knows. Sexuality is fluid imo. Could I be into men one day? I never have been but I def could.

Now if Eminem is gay or bi I really don’t mind, like that’s his business but if he says all this things for attention I think he’s a fool for that.. you can’t just say some stuff because you seek attention

There’s been a lot of great journalism in 2017, but the reported who didn’t ask Eminem any followup questions about using Grindr has let down their entire profession https://t.co/sVTD6qr1lw

IMHO I don’t think Eminem was really joking when he said he uses Grindr. He is very smart and self-aware. I think he knows people will *think* he’s joking – and that his rep will say he’s joking – but I don’t think he’s joking. And good for him! ???

The rapper also once again explained that he wasn’t homophobic.
The first time I got a taste of being called anti-gay was on “My Name Is” when I said, “My English teacher wanted to have sex in junior high / The only problem was my English teacher was a guy.” All I was saying was I don’t swing that way. So when I started getting flack for it, I thought, Alright, you people think I’m homophobic? Watch this.

A spokesperson from the rapper’s record label revealed Wednesday that it was all a joke. “I’m confirming that he was joking about using both Tinder and Grindr,” the spokesperson said. Well, it was nice while it lasted.
