The women’s U.S. soccer team won the bronze medal on Thursday in the Tokyo Olympics, but, because of their failure to bring home gold, former President Trump claimed that they are “headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs” and that America “should replace the wokesters with Patriots.”
Just weeks after telling people to boo the Soccer Team at the Tokyo Olympics, Donald Trump now says “Leftist Maniacs” were the reason they didn’t win gold, and also spread false rumors about the team online.
“If our soccer team, headed by a radical group of Leftist Maniacs, wasn’t woke, they would have won the Gold Medal instead of the Bronze. Woke means you lose, everything that is woke goes bad, and our soccer team certainly has,” Trump said in a statement Thursday morning.
He later called out the team for kneeling during the national anthem during the Olympics, something they didn’t do.
People are outraged online by his false statements but aren’t exactly surprised…
One Facebook user wrote: “I don’t know where he spewed these aberrations, he is ridiculous and irrelevant, and let’s not report on every idiocy that comes out of his mouth! As long as he doesn’t instigate another attack on our democracy, we want to forget he exists!”
While another commented: “As soon as Trump can fit into a pair of soccer shorts and run the length of the field without collapsing, perhaps I’ll listen to what this bitter old man has to say. He’s just mad our women are winners and he isn’t.”
And it’s not the first time that Trump has caused an uproar. Just last month, a Trump rally broke out in Phoenix after he encouraged an aggravated crowd to shout hate towards the team.
The political action committee Turning Point Action sponsored the “Protect Our Elections Rally,” which turned into an attack on “woke” culture and eventually U.S. athletes.
“Wokeism makes you lose,” Trump said, according to a video of the ex-president posted by Turning Point officials.
“The U.S. Women’s soccer team is a very good example of what’s going on,” he continued, smirking as the crowd started to boo.
“Earlier this week they unexpected lost to Sweden three to nothing and Americans were happy about it,” he said, a line that drew laughs and cheers – enough for Trump to quickly add “you proved that point before I even said it.”
The former President’s antagonistic relationship with the U.S. team is nothing new, back in 2019, Megan Rapinoe called herself a “walking protest” to Trump’s policies.
And, on Thursday, trump called her “the woman with the purple hair” and said she didn’t play well because she spent too much time on politics, despite her scoring a rare type of goal on the pitch.
