Due to the dangers that surrounded this case, extra precautions had to be taken in order to make sure the jurors were protected. Many feared that they would be tracked down and murdered for ultimately bringing down one of the most dangerous men the world has ever seen.

El Chapo even promised that he wouldn't kill them!

Are you supposed to take his word for it? If I was a juror called to this case, I would do whatever I could to get myself off it.

And that's what many of them did.

There were tears, in what was described as an "open rebellion" but in the end, twelve non-biased jurors were picked and within thirty-six hours, they had come to a "guilty" verdict.

Even though he didn't have the support of the jury, he had the support of one particular person.

His wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro. Throughout the entire case, she made appearances in court, supporting the man she loved.

She had met the notorious drug dealer when she was seventeen and he was fifty.

The two had been married for eleven years when he finally got caught.

She sat in the house of law, listening to the horrid stories told by those on the stand about how her husband was involved in appalling activities such as rape and torture.

Yet her loyalty remained constant.

She told The New York Times: "I don't know my husband as the person they are trying to show him as, but rather I admire him as the human being that I met, and the one that I married."

She called him "an excellent father, friend, brother, son, partner."

And even after knowing what he was being charged with, she continued to stand by these claims.

So, being so close to a notorious drug lord, why was she allowed to walk free?

Apparently, Coronel Aispuro claimed that she had no idea about her husband's illegal activities. Even when an ex-member of their own cartel, Damaso Lopez, testified against her, saying that she was the one that helped him escape prison in 2015, she continued to deny being associated with any of his "businesses."

However, hard evidence was discovered during the trial.

On two separate occasions, she was caught with an illegal cell phone in which she was contacting her husband without the knowledge of the courts.

Yet, she managed to remain free, until now...

Born in California, the ex-beauty-queen met El Chapo at a dance. Within a few months, on her eighteenth birthday, the two wed after Guzman stormed in with a bunch of armed men and demanded the right to marry her. I guess that counts as a proposal, right?

Years later, their relationship still seems to be going strong.

The couple showed solidarity in the courtroom by wearing matching outfits and giving each other the occasional thumbs-up.

At one point, Coronel Aispuro even laughed out loud during one of Chapo's mistress' testimony.

The woman was smart in her own right. After studying journalism, she had a strong foundation on how to handle the press. She rarely gave interviews and avoided answering questions hurled towards her.

And the one time she actually did give an interview, she managed to portray her husband as a hero.

She told The Los Angeles Times: "He would be incapable of touching a woman with bad intentions, of trying to make her do something she didn't want to do."

She also used her Twitter account to make sure that her feelings about her husband were clear.

Translated from Spanish, this is what she tweeted: "We both knew that to make us a reality we would have to pay a huge price: distance, time, challenges, and sacrifices. It was worth it."
