Elliot Page's wife has addressed the misconceptions surrounding her own gender identity, and why she refuses to discuss her sexuality...

After Elliot Page's announcement, his wife, Emma Portner, has stepped forward with a heartwarming message...

And, in it, she explained why she herself won't be addressing her own gender identity and sexuality.

Now, Elliot Page has been dominating the headlines as of late.

The actor initially rose to mainstream prominence from his native Canada in 2005 with the revenge thriller Hard Candy, and was lavished with praise for his performance, even bagging the Austin Film Critics Association's Award for Best Actress.

Just 2 years later, he starred in a film we all know and love...

Juno, of course!

The indie flick saw Page received an Academy Award nomination among several other accolades.

His other notable roles include Kitty Pryde in the X-Men franchise, Christopher Nolan’s Inception, Whip It!, and Sony’s reboot of Flatliners.

Page has also made the crossover into production.

Producing and starring in flicks such as Tallulah and Freeheld.

And last year...

He marked his directorial debut examining environmental racism faced by people of color, as per Variety.

Oh, and who can forget?

You may also recognize the star for his role in the Netflix smash hit The Umbrella Academy.

But, amongst his acting credits, Page is also a prominent figure among LGBTQ+ fans...

And has long been an advocate for the community. But now, he has further enriched his legacy with an announcement made last night.

Page released a statement on social media, coming out as transgender.

In the deeply personal essay, he began: “Hi friends, I want to share with you that I am trans, my pronouns are he/they, and my name is Elliot. I feel lucky to be writing this. To be here."

"To have arrived at this place in my life. I feel overwhelming gratitude for the incredible people who have supported me along this journey."

"I can’t begin to express how remarkable it feels to finally love who I am enough to pursue my authentic self."

He continued:

"I’ve been endlessly inspired by so many in the trans community. Thank you for your courage, your generosity and ceaselessly working to make this world a more inclusive and compassionate place. I will offer whatever support I can and continue to strive for a more loving and equal society," he wrote.

“I love that I am trans. And I love that I am queer."

"And the more I hold myself close and fully embrace who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the more I thrive. To all the trans people who deal with harassment, self-loathing, abuse, and the threat of violence every day: I see you, I love you, and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better," Page continued.

He then asked for “patience" as he navigates his identity.

“My joy is real, but it is also fragile," he wrote “The truth is, despite feeling profoundly happy right now and knowing how much privilege I carry, I am also scared."

He also added this:

“I’m scared of the invasiveness, the hate, the ‘jokes’ and of violence. To be clear, I am not trying to dampen a moment that is joyous and one that I celebrate, but I want to address the full picture."

Nick Adams, GLAAD’s Director of Transgender Media, has spoken out since Page released his heartfelt statement.

“Elliot Page has given us fantastic characters on-screen and has been an outspoken advocate for all LGBTQ people. He will now be an inspiration to countless trans and non-binary people. All transgender people deserve the chance to be ourselves and to be accepted for who we are. We celebrate the remarkable Elliot Page today."

And of course, fans have also be enoffering their support.

And now, their wife, Emma Portner has also written a heartfelt message for her spouse.

Portner, a dancer and choreographer, married Page back in 2018.

In an Instagram post wherein she shared Page's written statement, she wrote a caption in support of her spouse.

She said this: "I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world. I also ask for patience & privacy but that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day."

"Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself."

And she also added some advice at the end writing: "Shine on sweet E. Love you so much."

The post racked up over 79,000 likes in the first twenty-four hours...

But now, Emma has taken to Instagram to address her own personal questions: "My gender identity, pronouns, and sexuality are private and not up for debate."

Emma cleared up a few misconceptions about herself in an Instagram story that has since expired...

In it, she clarified she is "not Rey from Star Wars," the character played by Daisy Ridley, and identifies as a "Canadian dancer, choreographer, and student at U of T."

But most importantly, she made it clear that it was just Elliot who made their story public, while Emma wants to keep hers private.

"My gender identity, pronouns, and sexuality are private and not up for debate," Emma wrote. "Would love for the energy in discussion over my identity to shift into addressing the climate crisis or sharing resources to support the LGBTQIA2+ resiliency instead."

We respect her choice and wish them both all the best on their journey together.
