‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ Author Eric Carle Dies Aged 91

The author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Eric Carle, has died aged ninety-one.

The Hungry Caterpillar, along with other classics such as The Very Quiet Cricket, touched the hearts of millions all over the world.

The genius behind the ideas, Eric Carle, became a staple of every child’s bookshelf.

So it was unfortunate to hear the news that he passed away on Sunday.

The tragic news was released initially by the his family and then later confirmed by the Eric Carle Team on Twitter, who posted a touching tribute to their late inspiration.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share that Eric Carle, author & illustrator of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and many other beloved classics, passed away on 23rd at the age of 91,” they wrote.

“Thank you for sharing your talent with generations of young readers.”

Even though his family didn’t reveal the cause of his death, TMZ reported that his son, Rolf, told the New York Times that he died of kidney failure.

At the time he was at his summer studio in Northampton, Massachusetts.

Throughout his illustrious career, he illustrated more than seventy different children’s books.

His most famous piece, The Hungry Caterpillar, was published in 1969 and went on to sell a whopping 55 million copies.

However, in total, all of his work combined hits the 170 million mark.

Carle was ninety-one at the time of his death.
