Healthline estimates that around 8 to 10 percent of the world’s population has blue eyes.

This is despite the fact that it’s a recessive gene, so you need 2 of them to get blue eyes.

However, scientists have now discovered more about the trait.

And they can track it all back to one singular ancestor!

Scientists from the University of Copenhagen have discovered that it is a genetic mutation that causes the eye color.

As per LADbible, the mutation causes the gene called HERC2 to turn off the OCA2 brown eye gene. In turn, the brown eyes get diluted into blue.

They can track the trait back to a singular ancestor because every blue-eyed person has the same mutation.

However, this isn’t the case for people with green eyes.

Professor Hans Eiberg explained to Science Daily: “Meanwhile, people who have green eyes can be explained by the fact they have a reduced amount of melanin in the iris, which is very different to those with blue eyes.”
