“We haven’t detected it yet. But when you have a virus that is showing this degree of transmissibility and you’re already having travel-related cases that they’ve noted in Israel and Belgium and other places, when you have a virus like this, it almost invariably is ultimately going to go essentially all over.”

The Omicron variant has many mutations.

More specifically, the Omicron variant has more than 30 mutations to the spike protein that allows the virus to bind to human cells.

In comparison, the Delta variant had just nine mutations.

Epidemiologist Katelyn Jetelin said:

“This is an insane amount of change. As a comparison, Delta had 9 changes on the spike protein. [The spike is’ the key into our cells. If the virus changes to become a smarter key, we need to know.”

At the time of writing, the world is racing to contain the new variant which is potentially more dangerous than previous ones which have fuelled relentless waves of infection on nearly every continent.

However she decided to sign an executive order to allow the health department to limit non-essential, non-urgent procedures at hospitals and acquire critical supplies more quickly.

The order takes effect on December 3.

Hochul said:
“We continue to see warning signs of spikes this upcoming winter, and while the new omicron variant has yet to be detected in New York state, it’s coming.”

Biden has also imposed travel restrictions to/from South Africa – where the new variant was first detected.

The move is similar to many countries across the globe, as the world tries to contain the threat of Omicron.
